Thompson III, served as Monterey County Deputy District Attorney from 1968 to 1971 and then co-founded Thomas, Panetta & Thompson. Governor Ronald Reagan appointed his former partner Donald A. Thomas to the bench in 1972 and partner Leon E. Panetta was elected to Congress in 1976 [Mr. Panetta later served as the President's Chief of Staff].
